Dental Services at Rossmore Animal Hospital

At Rossmore Animal Hospital, we understand the importance of dental health in pets. That's why we offer comprehensive dental services to keep your furry friends' teeth clean and healthy.

Maintaining your pet's dental health is crucial for their overall well-being and quality of life. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs and cats, and it can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. Poor dental health can cause pain, difficulty eating, and even lead to infections that can spread to other parts of the body. Additionally, dental disease has been linked to other health issues such as heart disease and kidney disease in pets. By ensuring your pet's dental health is properly maintained through regular cleanings and check-ups, you can help prevent these issues and ensure your pet lives a happy, healthy life.

Every pet should have a thorough oral examination by a veterinarian to assess the integrity and health of the teeth, gums, tongue and other oral structures. Signs of oral disease include:

  • Foul or fetid smell to the mouth, this includes saliva
  • Inflamed gums
  • Bloody mouth, gums or gum line, or bloody saliva
  • Difficulty chewing

Dental Disease in Dogs

Dental disease is one of the most common problems we see in daily practice. Small dogs are more severely affected. Larger dogs like Labradors, that chew a lot of sticks and bones have a lot less problems. Big dogs tend to chip and crack their teeth which can sometimes lead to tooth loss, but far more teeth are lost due to periodontal disease.

The most common form of dental disease is periodontitis. This occurs because calculus, the hard brown material that forms over the teeth allows bacteria to get up under the gums. This loosens and breaks down the ligaments that hold your teeth in place. Dogs with periodontitis have more kidney and heart problems. A dental prophy involves cleaning and polishing the teeth. The infected teeth are pulled and infected pockets are scraped out and cleaned. It is often difficult to determine the true extent of dental problems until your dog is anesthetised and the deep pockets between the gums and the roots can be probed.

Tooth brushing is the single best preventative measure that can be done but hardly anyone does it. Either a soft child's brush or finger brush can be used with the palatable toothpaste. Dogs like the chicken flavored one. Even if it is done just once a week, it helps.

If you do not have time to brush your pet's teeth, consider T/D diet made by Hills. It is a patented food that has been scientifically designed not to crumble as they eat, so it actually scrapes the teeth. It is the only pet food available to have a label claim for the prevention of gingivitis.

Another product is Enzadent Dental Chews. These rawhide strips are impregnated with an enzymatic toothpaste to help break down tartar and calculus.

If you wish to schedule your pet’s teeth cleaning, call the office at 613-966-2006. If you dogs dental problems are not pressing, you could consider deferring the procedure until February when we offer 20% off all dental procedures
